The Hard and Soft of Shoreline Management:  Perspectives and Tools for New Hampshire

The conference is sponsored by Shoreline management is a challenge under the best of circumstances. Safety, property, municipal and state infrastructure, and natural, historical, and cultural resources all need to be considered when making shoreline management decisions. These challenges have grown with more frequent and severe weather events as well as rising sea levels.

Shoreline management is a challenge under the best of circumstances. Safety, property, municipal and state infrastructure, and natural, historical, and cultural resources all need to be considered when making shoreline management decisions. These challenges have grown with more frequent and severe weather events as well as rising sea levels.

Conference Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • Shoreline management – what it is and why we do it
  • Basic coastal concepts and vocabulary
  • Shoreline treatments available for New Hampshire’s diverse coastal shoreline and conditions
  • Shoreline management best practices and strategies
  • Integrating protection of infrastructure with natural, historical, and cultural resources

This conference is designed with time for dialogue and discussion of options and priorities from different perspectives. Participants will learn the advantages and disadvantages of different shoreline management options for New Hampshire.

National Estuarine Research Reserve, The Univ. of New Hampshire and UNH Cooperative Extension and Sea Grant, and with support from The Nature Conservancy, The City of Portsmouth, Stephenson Strategic Communications, The Rockingham Planning Commission, Stevens Institute of Technology, The Hudson River NERR, NOAA, and the New Hampshire Coastal Adaptation Workgroup.
